    Getting Ready for Convention!

    Agenda/Bylaw/Administrative Topics: The deadline to submit agenda topics, bylaw resolutions, and administrative topics is August 27, 2018.  The Procedures are in Sections 22.7 and 22.8 of the NFPA Procedures Manual, or contact the Secretary and Director of Operations at secretary@paralegals.org for more information.  If an association is submitting a “Discussion Topic” only and anticipate the “Discussion Topic” becoming a motion before the Delegate Assembly, please include a motion and proposed resolution for the Discussion Topic.  Without a motion and proposed resolution, no action will be taken by the Delegate Assembly.

    Convention Bids:  We will be accepting bids for the 2022 Convention (which will be held in on the East Coast to the Midwest) on or before September 25, 2018.  The Procedures are in Section 22.3 of the NFPA Procedures Manual, or contact the Secretary and Director of Operations at secretary@paralegals.org for more information.

    Submitting "In Memoriam" Information

    Each year during the Policy Meeting we recognize those members of NFPA who have passed away since the last Convention.  If there is a member in your local association who has passed away since the 2017 Convention that you would like to recognize, please email Lisa Vessels  no later than September 15. In addition to any personal information about them, please provide any details about their contributions to your local association, the paralegal profession, and/or the legal community.  If a photo is also provided, it will be displayed during the In Memoriam portion of the Policy Meeting.

    The State of the Paralegal Profession Committee needs you!  The composition of the committee is set by Resolution 15-05, and 7 to 11 people from all of the following groups are needed: NFPA Board of Directors, delegates, association members, members of the Advisory Council, and non-attorney representatives.  If you are interested in joining this Committee, please submit your letter of interest including your membership criteria per the Resolution for this Committee online through the Coordinator and/or Committee Member Interest Form available at https://www.paralegals.org/i4a/forms/index.cfm?id=26&pageid=3526

    Non-members may submit their letters of interest including membership criteria per the Resolution for this Committee to nominations@paralegals.org.

    Call for Articles: Contribute to the National Paralegal Reporter

    We are looking for articles for the Fall issue of the National Paralegal Reporter! This issue will cover the themes of health insurance, life insurance and your rights--including topics such as:

    • Wellness: mindfulness, fitness, etc.
    • Paralegal assistance program, stress and substance abuse
    • Being a paralegal doesn't necessarily mean you have to be sedentary

    You may also submit a feature article on any topic relevant to paralegals. The deadline to submit an article has been extended to June 5! To submit an article or for more information, contact the editor, Dan O’Leary.

    Apply for a Paralegal Scholarship

    NFPA is now accepting applications for our annual scholarships, sponsored by Thomson Reuters and the Paralegal Education Group.

    The NFPA/Thomson Reuters Scholarship will award a total of $5,000 to two paralegal students. The PCCE and PACE scholarships, sponsored by the Paralegal Education Group, cover the costs of a review manual, a PEG online review course and the exam fee for either the PACE or the PCCE.

    All completed applications must be post-marked by July 1 in order to be considered.

    From Sue Graney, WMPA Pro Bono/Charity Drive Coordinator: 

    Community Legal Aid will be holding a training program to support its Volunteers for Justice Program on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 9:00am-12:30pm in their Springfield office.  Community Legal Aid is seeking Paralegals as volunteers!  This program trains and mentors volunteers to act as lay advocates for low-income tenants facing eviction.  Please see the attached flyer for details. 

    In addition to having a direct impact on the community, pro bono services can also increase our network opportunities, develop our professional skills, and enhance our resumes. 

    Please consider attending this training session to volunteer in the Springfield Housing Court.
